Central Kalimantan, April 20, 2024 - Minister of Environment and Forestry, Mrs. Siti Nurbaya Bakar, attended the inauguration event of the Standard Information and Science and Technology Center for Peat CAMPPEAT KHDTK (Special Purpose Forest Area) Tumbang Nusa, built by Turangga Resources. The event took place on April 20, 2024, in Tumbang Nusa Village, Jabiren Raya District, Pulang Pisau Regency, Central Kalimantan Province, and was also attended by the Vice Governor of Central Kalimantan, Mr. Edy Pratowo.
As a node for research and development collaboration in environmental affairs, the Information Center becomes an integrated facility that provides standard information and science and technology related to peat swamp forest management and KHDTK Tumbang Nusa. With its vital role as a knowledge hub, learning center, and best practice center for science and technology development as well as the application of national to international standards, this Information Center is also expected to serve as a foundation for sustainable development in this sector.
A representative of Turangga Resources Directorate, Mr. Rapinis Mutiara, also provided the company's perspective on the importance of peatland management. He emphasized that Indonesia has the fourth largest expanse of peatlands in the world, which have the potential to absorb and store global carbon up to 14%. In line with this vision, Turangga Resources has also handed over the rehabilitation of Watershed Areas (DAS) covering an area of 2,877 hectares in 2023, and targets an additional 1,700 hectares in 2024.
With initiatives such as the construction of the Standard Information and Science and Technology Center for Peat CAMPPEAT KHDTK Tumbang Nusa and the rehabilitation efforts undertaken by Turangga Resources, awareness of the importance of peat management as a valuable natural resource will continue to increase. This is an important step in efforts to maintain the sustainability of peat ecosystems and strengthen Indonesia's position in global climate change mitigation efforts.
